Off Grid Installations
An off-grid renewable energy system is a stand alone system that uses it's own battery bank to store power. By installing this type of unit you can be assured that you will always have power when you need it. When photovoltaic panels are combined with a wind generator you maximize the energy collection potential of your system. So when the sun goes down, you can still make power all night long if the wind is blowing.
Grid Tie Installations
This type of system is similar to an off grid system in the aspect of generating power. However the difference lies in how the power is stored. With a grid-tie system, the power that is created and not used is stored in the power grid. When you need power, it is taken from the grid for use. If you use less than you generate, you are only charged for the monthly service fee for hook up, however you will not receive a check from Helco for any unused power. Likewise, if you use more power than you generate, you will be charged the current rate per kilowatt for the additional power. If there is power outage on the grid, you will also have no power, even if it is sunny.
